Finance, Cognition, and Default Network in Aging
(FCDNA)
Principal Investigator: S. Duke Han, PhD
About Our Study
Researchers at USC believe that changes in financial decision making in older age may be linked to cognitive decline. The overall goal of this study is to examine characteristics of financial decision making in older age (e.g., experiences of scam, fraud, and financial exploitation) in relation to possible markers of cognitive decline, change in behavioral economic preferences, and brain imaging measures. Study findings will inform early detection and intervention programs focused on cognitive health and wellbeing in old age.
Participant Eligibility

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
*Pending COVID-19 safety guidelines and preferences, the length and format of participation in the study may vary.*
How long is the study?
FCDNA is a non-medication research study. Participants will be followed for three years.
What is involved in testing?
Pending COVID-19 safety guidelines and preferences, some or all of the following may be asked of the participant:
Behavioral Data Collection Session:
Once every year, participants will complete a behavioral session. The behavioral sessions will occur at the USC Department of Psychology offices at the USC main campus in Los Angeles, CA. The behavioral assessments will include standard measures of cognition, health, economics, and financial status using pencil-paper and computerized measures.
Participants may be asked to participate in a one-hour qualitative follow-up interview based on how they respond to certain questions.
Saliva Sample:
During the first year only, participant saliva will be collected with mouthwash to obtain genetic data.
Neuroimaging Session:
During the first and third year, participants will complete a brain scanning session using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The scanning session will occur at the USC Dornsife Cognitive Neuroimaging Center or at the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute.
Do I need to prepare anything prior to participating?
There are no materials or preparation required for participating in the study.
Is there compensation?
Money will be given for participation. Please contact HanResearchLab@gmail.com or call (213) 340-6043 for details.
Where is the study located?
The study will take place at two locations. The behavioral data collection session will take place at the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Department of Psychology offices located at 3620 McClintock Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90089. The neuroimaging session will take place either in the same offices or at the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute located at 2025 Zonal Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90033. Transportation to and from the study sites can be provided; otherwise, validated parking is available.
